Is this a beautiful photograph of live models playing lovers and embracing?
This is a beautiful detail photograph of a 400 year old marble sculpture by Bernini entitled Pluto and Proserpina, for modern PC sensibilities, and originally The Rape of Proserpina. And yes, those indentations in the flesh are literally carved in stone.
Proserpina is the Latin variant of the Greek name Persephone, and the word “rape” in those times signified “abduction”. Pluto, her uncle, is carrying her away to “marry” him and live as Queen of the Underworld, in Hades.
Bernini was 23 years old in 1621 when he completed this work of art.
The image of the Bernini sculpture brought to my mind another image showing fingers indenting flesh – this one a GIF by modern digital artist and GIF master George RedHawk, whose work I have featured in other posts here, here and here.
